Please post a response detailing the work you have undertaken towards the convention .

  1. I have read and analysed the Declaration of Independence in order to determine whether it contains any key points that could be used to defend and justify secession of the Confederate States from the Union. These key points could be used as part of our manifesto or arguments for the convention.

  2. As I am a negotiator, I researched the reasons why the South supported and depended on slavery and also reasons why the North were against slavery. From this, I have been able to make a short list of things that the South would be willing to give up or negotiate in order to prevent the Civil War from happening.

I have looked at events and political happenings leading up to Fort Sumpter and immediately afterwards in order to determine what Southern and Northern attitudes were in terms of an impending civil war. This has given me some idea as to what I think the South may have been willing and not willing to sacrifice in order to prevent the War occurring.

I have meet with Freya and Gemma (other presenters) to organize the powerpoint presentation. We agreed that Gemma would make the presentation and that Freya and I would speak at the convention. We have also conversed with the writers and agreed upon a direction we would take and a timeline for getting the speech done.

  5. (Researcher)
I have analysed the US Bill of Rights determining if there are any relevant points relating to the legality of the South's secession from the North. From there I have discussed how these points may have been used by the south to justify their secession and the importance of the Bill of Rights to the South.

  8. As co-convenor, It has been my job to oversee each of the different task groups to ensure that our class is progressing forward in the right direction, and that all of our groups understand the overall message of our office. This has involved meeting with each of the groups to discuss their individual roles, creating and enforcing deadlines and mediating email exchanges.

I have met with other presenters and we decided on who was to create the powerpoint. There is currently a time line in place for when we are to receive the speech from the writers. I am currently doing some more background reading on the subject just to get a complete understanding.

I have looked into key people and events to create a sign that represents our main points. The sign will be an overview of our group and represent Jefferson Davis.

  12. (Negotiator)
I worked with the other negotiators to establish the areas of our platform that we could concede and those that we would refuse to compromise on. We also discussed which groups we would try to target in negotiations.

  13. As a negotiator, I worked with the others to develop stances to adopt on the day. Moreover, I researched Jefferson Davis and the Confederate mottos and songs to comprehend the sentiment of the time, to be able to put myself in their position, come negotiations.

  14. (writer). As a writer, I worked with the other group's writer (James) to compile a manifesto. We had to coordinate with the researchers when we were going to receive the information, and informed the presenters when we would hope to have a finalised manifesto ready for them. we received the researchers' research on Friday and than subsequently spent our weekend working on a manifesto. James and I worked on it together, and through collaboration was able to build on each other's work. we e-mailed it through to the convenors and the presenters midday Sunday (as we had planend to)
